As I look back on my first class with you, I remember something you asked each of us that day, "What is it that you would like to get by attending this class?" It seemed odd to me you would ask such a question, and now I know that it certainly is an odd thing to do! I gave you a silly answer, but I tried to act very serious about it. I said I wanted to be promoted. Well, I knew that a promotion was very unlikely, but you had no way of knowing that. You had no way of knowing that I had not been promoted for over five years. You had no way of knowing that I was not succeeding at my job. You actually thought I had a chance to get a promotion! Your idealism was really annoying.
That was a year ago. It's amazing how much can happen in a year, and it's amazing how much we can make happen in a year. My first promotion came to me after six months. I thought it was just a coincidence. My second promotion came after another three months. how things change! My third promotion came a few weeks ago. It almost seems strange to look back and realize that I got three promotions. It's even stranger to see that my company had to create all three of these jobs just so I could be promoted. They don't create many jobs around here, or at least they didn't up to a year ago. Your idealism is really exciting!
